Uganda's National Parks reflect the extraordinary diversity of the country: a region of lakes, swamps, dense grassland, woodland, rolling plains, forests and mountainous areas.

Owing to a variety of habitats with abundant grass and browse, Uganda supports an incredibly high species biodiversity with a high level of endemism (e.g. mountain gorillas). In order to protect and effectively manage these invaluable resources on a sustainable basis, the Uganda National Parks Authority was established in 1952. The organisation presently manages ten national parks, namely: Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley, Lake Mburo, Rwenzori Mountain, Bwindi Impenetrable, Mgahinga Gorilla, Mt. Elgon, Semuliki, and Kibale National Parks. Each of these parks is to a large extent unique from the others and one will have a real different experience in each of the parks visited.

Your visit to a protected area contributes to the welfare of the local community. These communities receive:

  • Receive 20% of Park Entry fees
  • Participate in community based tourism
  • Utilise resources in the park like bamboo shoots, medicinal plants and fire wood.
  • Establish wildlife enterprises in the parks
  • And sell their craft products as souvenirs

Hints for your comfort.....
Take an anti-malarial prophylactic. Bring an insecticide spray. There are tsetse flies and mosquitoes in some of the parks. Put used matches and cigarette ends into your car ashtray. During dry seasons, it is particularly easy to set the bush aflame. Extinguish campfires completely using sand or water. Keep to the speed limits marked at the park sign posts and drive slowly past game. Do not hoot and keep at least 20m between you and the animals. Give all animals right of way. Leave your pets and firearms at home.
